Business Studies is not taught at key stage 3 but is one of the options offered at key stage 4 for GCSE.

Key Stage 4

Applied Business GSCE

Applied Business relates to the world of business and the community at large. Students pursuing a course in Business will be encouraged to develop their knowledge and understanding of business in a vocational context. It is a suitable qualification for those who want a broad background in business and those who want to progress to Higher Education. It will provide essential information for those entering the world of work.

The use of ICT is a strong feature of the course as today most businesses have come to rely on it.

The syllabus is based on coursework and a written examination.

Key Stage 5

Business Studies

This specification is divided into a total of 4 units, 2 AS units and 2 A2 units.

Year 12

AS - Unit 1 (Written examination: 1hr 15)

Learners will study the following content areas:

  • Enterprise
  • Business plans
  • Markets
  • Market research
  • Business structure
  • Business location
  • Business finance
  • Business revenue and costs

AS - Unit 2 (Written examination: 2hr)

Learners will study the following content areas:

  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • People in organisations (human resources)
  • Operations management.

The two AS units will give learners an understanding of the important role played by small businesses in the economy and the opportunities that exist for entrepreneurs, as well as the importance of established businesses and not-for-profit organisations in providing goods and services.

Year 13

A2 - Unit 3 (Written examination: 2hr 15)

Learners will study the following:

  • Data analysis
  • Market analysis
  • Sales forecasting
  • Analysing financial performance
  • Analysing non-financial performance
  • Aims and objectives
  • Strategy and implementation
  • Decision-making models
  • Investment appraisal
  • Special orders

A2 - Unit 4 (Written examination: 2hr 15)

Learners will study the following:

  • Change
  • Risk management
  • PEST factors
  • Ethical, legal and environmental factors
  • International trade
  • Globalisation
  • The European Union

Entry Requirements

C Grades in both Maths and English. Business Studies GCSE would be an advantage but NO Prior knowledge needed to study this course.
