From time to time we have pupils joining us from schools that do not study Welsh. The following document may be used to help prepare for Welsh lessons here at Porthcawl.

Throughout each unit of work pupils will receive regular homework, including core homework. Pupils will be assessed at the end of each unit of work in the following skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Key Stage 3
Year 7
September – October half term
Fi – talking about myself, personal details and opinions.
October – February half term
Ein Byd – looking at the Welsh language and Patagonia.
February – May half term
School – lessons, opinions, teachers, uniform, school dinners, trips, clubs.
May half term onwards
DCF project on the topic of school.
Year 8
September – October half term
Sports – Names of sports, details, where? when? with whom? teams, favourite teams and players, past tense.
October – February half term
Shopping and fashion – key vocabulary, favourite/least favourite shops, opinions with extended reasons, last weekend, next weekend.
February – May half term
Wales – what Wales means to us, sports, music, celebrations and events, organisations in Wales.
May half term onwards
DCF project – create a magazine.
Year 9
September – October half term
Mobile phones and technology – key vocabulary, opinions, reasons, past tense, conditional tense, details, when? where? with whom?
October – February half term
Holidays – opinions, past tense, where? when? with whom? weather? What did you do? Describe hotel/villa, compare countries.
February – May half term
Area – Places in area, opinions, places for young people, how to improve area, Welsh in local area, past tense.
May half term onwards
Arwyr – Welsh heroes, third person, descriptions.
Ways in which parents can help:
- Check planner regularly to ensure homework is completed.
- Assist with homework.
- Assist in revision for assessments.
- Encourage extended reading/use of the library.
- Encourage pupils to use Hwb+ and resources.
- Help pupils to learn key vocabulary and sentence patterns.
- Encourage pupils to copy up work following an absence.
